Women Leaders to Address Future of Energy Sector
Women leaders in the natural gas, coal and related industries will share their insights on opportunities and challenges facing West Virginia’s energy sector and how they will shape the future of the Mountain State at a special Elevations luncheon, to be held Thursday, July 28, at the Charleston Marriott Town Center Pavilion.
Sharon O. Flanery, a petroleum engineer and attorney who leads the Steptoe & Johnson Energy Team, will moderate “Women with Energy,” a roundtable discussion with female business executives, lawyers, engineers and other professionals on the front lines of developments in the natural gas and coal fields.

Working in partnership with about 4,000 volunteers, Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council serves nearly 20,000 girls in 61 counties in West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.
The event begins at 11:45 a.m. with informal networking (optional), followed by a luncheon and program at noon. Registration is $25 for Alliance members/$35 future members through April 8. Prices increase to $35 Alliance members/$45 future members after that date.

Business Pioneer Kim Knopf to Speak Dec. 2

Mattress Warehouse founder Kim Knopf will be the featured speaker at the Dec. 2 Charleston Area Alliance Professional Women’s Network luncheon to be held at the Charleston Marriott Town Center. The event begins with informal networking at 11:45 a.m., followed by a luncheon and speaker presentation at noon. Reservations are $30 for Alliance members/$40 for future members through Nov. 24. In 1983, Knopf responded to a newspaper ad for a salesperson in a bedding shop. The interviewer’s enthusiasm for the prospects of the business sparked her determination to run a shop of her own rather than someone else’s. At the tender age of 23, Knopf plunged headlong into the rough-and-tumble world of free enterprise. Just one year removed from her college days at the University of Kentucky, the young businesswoman put $25,000 on the table and set out to live the American dream.
She began by doing research and attending seminars offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Next, she prepared a business plan. The parents of her then boyfriend, now husband, took a look at her business plan and let her use a certificate of deposit for collateral to borrow half of the start-up money, and bought 50 percent of the company’s stock to give her the rest that she needed.
Over the next several decades, Knopf grew her company to 90 retail locations. She had two children along the way and went back to work when they were two to three weeks old, taking them to the office with her every day. She maintains a family-friendly atmosphere and views her employees as her second family, taking pride in helping them develop different skill sets and giving them opportunities to grow and succeed.
“I must make sure that the company’s culture is right. I think our employees take pride in and really find a purpose in their jobs and their role in the company’s success,” Knopf says.
Knopf has won several awards for professional achievement, including being a 1995 finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year, the 1996 GERS “Power User of the Year, a national technology award, and was profiled in Nation’s Business in 1998. In May 2010, Mattress Warehouse was one of only four bedding stores in the USA honored as a “Retail Giant of Bedding” by Furniture/Today.
She served as director of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce (1997-1999), director of the Putnam County Rotary Club (1997) and president (1999-2000); she is also a member of the Young President’s Organization, served as communication chair for the 1997-1998 year and is currently serving the organization as membership chairman.

“Dress for Success” donations to be collected During Elevations Academy
The 200 area women attending next week’s “Women, Finance & Philanthropy” workshop won’t just be learning how to empower themselves through financial literacy and community service, they’ll also have the chance to put what they’ve learned into action that day.
“Dress for Success” will be collecting donations of women’s career clothing, outerwear, shoes, jewelry and accessories during the first two hours of the workshop. Local Dress for Success representatives will be on hand to accept contributions and provide tax receipts to donors. The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
Attendees will also receive continuing education credits for their attendance. The program has been approved for 3.3 hours of CLE credit for attorneys, while CPAs will earn 3 CPE credit hours.

Davis Speaks at Elevations Luncheon

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Robin Davis spoke at a luncheon June 10 at the University of Charleston that was sponsored by Elevations, the Charleston Area Alliance’s Professional Women’s Network.
About 90 people attended the luncheon, which was held in the University of Charleston’s Erma Byrd Art Gallery.
JoEllen Zacks, the senior vice president of Charleston Area Alliance, said they were privileged and excited to have Davis at the luncheon.
“This is such a wonderful opportunity and experience for us,” Zacks said.
Zacks said Charleston Area Alliance’s goal is bringing the people, communities and businesses together.
“Together we can give the future a chance to fly,” Zacks said. “The best is yet to come.”
Davis said it was an honor to speak at the luncheon.
“It’s truly a pleasure to be among so many accomplished women,” Davis said. “To have the opportunity to speak with you and answer your questions is an honor.”
Davis discussed the new proposed appellate procedure rules when she spoke, highlighting the main reasons for updating the rules.
“The current rules are outdated since the last change was made 35 years ago,” Davis said. “The new rules are more modernized and transparent.”
Elevations’ mission is to enrich, empower and elevate professional women to achieve success.
“Professional women rely on Elevations as an essential network that will connect them with resources, contacts and information to enhance their lives,” Zacks said.
Davis said it is tough to juggle a career and a family, but it is not impossible.
“My husband is extremely supportive and helps me in any way he can,” Davis said. “Organization is the key. It is not impossible to have a career and a family.”
Elevations will hold its first annual Elevations Enrichment and Leadership Academy in September, Zacks said.
“Our first workshop is going to provide wonderful opportunities,” Zacks said. “It will be an incredible experience.”
The workshop will be held at the Embassy Suites on Sept. 14 and will begin at 8 a.m. The cost is $65 for Alliance members and $75 for others who would like to attend.
