The Charleston Area Alliance announces with great sadness the passing of Alliance board member John Ruddick
Ruddick had a long history with the Alliance and one of its predecessor organizations, the Charleston Renaissance Corporation. He served as treasurer for the Charleston Renaissance for many years. He was also on the transition team for the merger of Charleston Renaissance, the Business and Industrial Development Corporation (BIDCO) and the Charleston Chamber of Commerce.
Once the merger took place, Ruddick continued his service on the Alliance Board of Directors and was active on the Community Development Committee, where he served as the volunteer chair for more than six years.
“John was a steady, consistent advocate for enhancing the Charleston area’s quality of life,” said Susie Salisbury, Alliance vice president of community development. “He was well known for wanting umbrella tables up and down Capitol Street. He always wanted to create a vibrant downtown.”
Ruddick served on several boards, including the WV Public Employees Insurance Agency, the WV State Chamber of Commerce, the WV Special Olympics and the Marshall Artist Series. He was also the past chairman of the Education Alliance board of directors and the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce.
Last March, Ruddick’s tireless work was honored with the James R. Thomas Outstanding Volunteer award at the Alliance’s “We Love Our Community” Awards event.
The success of the Alliance today can be attributed to the visionary work of leaders such as Ruddick. We honor his legacy and join with the rest of the community in extending our deepest sympathy to his family at this sorrowful time.
