Bayer president & CEO to headline Annual Celebration May 8

Greg Babe, president and CEO of Bayer Corporation, will will headline the 2012 Charleston Area Alliance Annual Celebration. The event will be held Tuesday, May 8, at the West Virginia Culture Center at the State Capitol.

Bayer is one of the nation’s largest chemical and pharmaceutical companies. It’s also a major player in the state’s chemical industry.

Babe, who is retiring on June 30, is a 36-year veteran of Bayer. He has been president and CEO since October 2008. A native of New Martinsville, W.Va, Babe received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University in 1980.

Presented by title sponsor Jackson Kelly PLLC, the Annual Celebration will feature an engaging, fast-paced presentation, including remarks by Babe and a salute to the 2012 College Summit scholarship recipients and Leadership Kanawha Valley graduates.

The formal program will followed by a spectacular reception in the stunning lobby of the Culture Center. A VIP invitation-only reception for event sponsors will kick off the evening’s festivities. The full schedule includes:   VIP Sponsor Reception (invitation only):  4:00-5:00 p.m. Annual Celebration Formal Program: 5:00-6:15 p.m. Gala Reception:  6:15-8:00 p.m.   Tickets are $150 Alliance members/$200 future members through April 27. Prices increase to $200 Alliance members/$250 future members after that date.

The state’s chemical industry, which includes Bayer, is an economic powerhouse. Chemistry companies in West Virginia directly employ 9,576 people and indirectly contribute 48,010 jobs to the economy, according to the American Chemistry Council. For every chemical industry job in West Virginia, an additional 4.2 jobs are created within the state’s economy.

New Charleston CVB president to headline Elevations luncheon on April 19

Meet the new head of the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and learn all the exciting things on tap for the city at the next Elevations: Professional Women’s Network Luncheon.

The event will be held Thursday, April 19 starting at 11:45 a.m. at the Charleston Civic Center.

Alisa Bailey, the incoming president and CEO of the city’s CVB, will be the featured speaker. Bailey is a Charleston native and former head of the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC).

Tickets for this special event are $30 for Alliance members/$40 future members through April 13. Prices increase by $10 after that date.

Join the Alliance for the Europe tour pre-departure meeting on April 18

Join the Charleston Area Alliance on April 18 for a pre-departure meeting for the Alliance’s 2012 business mission and cultural tour of Europe. A few seats remain for this three country journey.

The meeting will feature guest speaker Dr. William Trumbull of the West Virginia University College of Business & Economics.

Also at the meeting, Sharon Silva of National Travel will discuss travel details, charter bus information and signature events that visitors can look forward to on the trip.

The meeting will be held Wednesday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Charleston Area Alliance on 1116 Smith Street.

Learn Adobe Acrobat at the Charleston Area Alliance on March 28

Sign up today for Adobe Acrobat training.

DigiTools is a partnership between the Charleston Area Alliance and Bridgemont Community and Technical College to offer training on Microsoft and Adobe Software.

This one session will focus on Adobe Acrobat, a software lets you communicate easier, faster, and better through Portable Document Formats (PDF).

Increase your productivity by editing and reusing content, streamlining reviews, and quickly creating fillable PDF form.

The class will be held on this Wednesday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. at the Charleston Area Alliance offices on 1116 Smith Street.

Join us Thursday as we celebrate 12 reasons to ‘Love Our Community’

The Charleston Area Alliance will host its fifth annual We Love Our Community Awards program this Thursday, March 22. The event will recognize 12 recipients representing the best in the Kanawha Valley.

“This is another fantastic program and each year, the Alliance is excited to host an event that shines a spotlight on the best of Charleston,” said Susie Salisbury, the Alliance’s vice president of community development. “This is about the grace of our people, places and culture, and recognizing these recipients fits well with our mission –building a vibrant community and prosperous economy.”

The program includes awards for several categories, including Outstanding Preservation, Best Development, Best Re-Development, Community Celebration, Youth Volunteer and Servant Leader and the Kanawha Heritage award, among others.

Each winner will receive an award created by White Oak Photography and presented by outstanding local musical talents using personalized lyrics like this one:

Than Charleston’s super volunteer
