Charleston House hotel sold; renovations planned

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The former Charleston House hotel in downtown Charleston will undergo major renovations during the next 18 months, the property’s new owner announced today.

Albany, N.Y.-based BBL Hospitality purchased the 256-room hotel this morning. The company will operate the property as the “Ramada Inn Downtown Charleston.”

Charleston-based BBL Carlton will oversee renovations of the hotel’s lobby, guest rooms and public areas. Retail shops and a sports-themed restaurant — called Recovery Sports Grill — will be added to the property.

“BBL Hospitality’s commitment to purchase and improve this property begins a new era for the hotel business in downtown Charleston in a building that was built when I was in high school,” said Charleston Mayor Danny Jones in a prepared statement.

“We started talking about this possibility five months ago, and BBL is a great corporate partner and neighbor for our city’s efforts to create Haddad Riverfront Park and Kanawha Boulevard as Charleston’s front porch for special events and visitors.”

BBL Hospitality described the planned renovations as a “much-needed upgrade to the once grand, but recently neglected downtown property.”

“This is a very exciting opportunity for BBL Hospitality and Carlton to return this hotel to its rightful place of prominence,” said Steven Obermayer, president of BBL Hospitality. “We have watched with great interest and strongly feel that we have a true diamond in the rough.”

BBL owns 13 hotels in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, and manages 10 of those properties.

The company did not immediately disclose the hotel’s purchase price today.

Philadelphia-based CW Capital Management, which sold the hotel to BBL, had listed an asking price of $5 million. The hotel — located at 600 Kanawha Boulevard East directly across from Haddad Riverfront Park– has been up for sale for more than a year.

Jones and BBL officials have scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference today to talk about the sale.

For years, the Charleston House operated as a Holiday Inn franchise. The hotel became a Ramada franchise in March.
