Help Generation Charleston Support College Summit This Summer
“At College Summit we create ripples in the pond that ultimately change the entire landscape. What can be better than taking four days of your schedule to help change the next four years for a promising student?” — Jessica Solomon, College Summit Volunteer
As its Year-Long Initiative, Generation Charleston has committed its support to College Summit, an organization with the mission to increase the college enrollment rates of low-income students in America.
Volunteers are crucial to the success of this mission. Eight four-day summer workshops are held on partner college campuses, including the following five West Virginia schools: Concord University, Fairmont State, Glenville State College, Marshall University and WV State University.
Following a training session on Thursday evening, volunteers work one-on-one with a small group of students to lead them through the steps of College Summit’s writing process to ultimately produce a personal essay they will be confident in submitting with their college applications. Please note, you need not be a writing expert — College Summit provides a step-by-step plan and assistance throughout the entire program from a Writing Coach Coordinator.
The weekend session culminates with a special banquet ceremony where the completed essays are shared with family, friends and fellow students.
Generation Charleston has pledged to recruit at least two volunteers per session — this is a wonderful opportunity to volunteer with a friend, coworker or your significant other, and can be scheduled now to fit into your summer plans. Additionally, many employers offer paid time off to cover the Friday portion of this unique volunteer experience; College Summit is happy to provide your employer with any necessary documentation.
We encourage you to visit www.collegesummit.org/volunteer for more information, including workshop dates and locations, and to sign up.
